In medical terminology, eczema is atopic dermatitis. It means inflammation of skin. There are actually many diverse types of skin diseases which can cause eczema like skin condition. These are the types of eczema -

There are many other kinds of dermatitis, like seborrheic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis, neuro-dermatitis and contact dermatitis, all quite related to and concurrent with eczema. However, lets not indulge deeply in classification and see what remedies provide relief from eczema.

It is still not clear what eczema exactly is and what causes it, which is utterly unfortunate. Given the fact that humans have advanced greatly in all walks of life, it still remains a pertinent question which begs comprehensive research.

As for now, it is believed that eczema may either be genetic and triggered by certain allergens or it could be something completely unknown. However, according to ancient medicinal texts of Ayurveda, all skin disorders are somewhat related to impurities in blood. So, if blood is made purer, there is hope that skin disorder may fade away. At least that is what I take of it.

Crush oatmeal into a very fine paste. Mix with water and apply over the skin rashes. Avoid the open wounds ( if any ). Keep it over the skin for half an hour. Wash it off very gently and dry your skin with the pat dry method. Invest some money in a soft towel as it really helps.
Do this treatment daily during the eczema flare up. It is quite gentle on skin and doesn't hurt.

Tip : Go for unpacked, unprocessed oats if you can as they are free from packaging chemicals which may be harmful.

2. Bentonite clay ( Excellent remedy for all kinds of eczema )
This is a remarkable remedy for eczema. It may not completely heal the skin rashes, but it provides a soothing effect. Bentonite is a clay that is well acclaimed for its skin improving qualities. Get pure bentonite clay. Mix with water and apply generously over all the skin rashes and surrounding region. Keep it for as long as you have time. Then wash it off. The lesions may be visibly reduced after a regular application for a week. It also works for babies or infants and can also be used on the face.

Why it works ?
Bentonite is one of most well known of medicinal clays. It has been used for centuries by people for numerous complaints. It helps in eczema by performing many therapeutic actions.

Bentonite clay should ideally be applied for 3 - 4 hours. It should be very wet and slippery in the beginning and it dries with time. Wash it off with cool or warm water.

You can use other varieties of clay, like Fuller's earth ( also Multani mitti ) , Kaolinite and Montmorillonite.

Clay can also be applied to babies for their eczema.

3. Almond paste
Soak almonds overnight. Next day, crush them along with the peel. Make a nice and fine paste of almond and apply in good amount on the skin lesions caused by eczema. Keep it for an hour or so. Then remove it with water and pat your skin dry.

4. Turmeric Paste
Turmeric is a powerful healer of most skin disorders and is as effective as clay for eczema in many people. It is more well noted for psoriasis treatment, but it works for eczema too.

5. Olive oil
The benefits of olive oil for skin are well known to mankind. One can as well try olive oil on the eczema lesions and see if they provide relief. As a precautionary measure, use olive oil on only one or two of the lesions.

Another way to use olive oil is this -

Add a pinch of turmeric to 1 tablespoon olive oil and massage it on eczema lesions. Keep it overnight, do not wash it off until next morning. This works better than pure olive oil because "curcumin" ( a special anti-inflammatory ingredient ) in turmeric is better absorbed in presence of fats.

6. Coconut oil
The proponents of coconut oil use it for nearly every condition that afflicts humans. It is deeply mositurizing for skin, very gentle and has a good smell. It is known to penetrate deep into the skin layers and heal it. Make sure you use Virgin Coconut Oil only.

Apply a thin layer of coconut oil on eczema lesions 3 times a day. Follow this routine for a week and notice the difference. Snap pictures of a prominent lesion on the start of treatment and on seventh day. Notice the difference.

Coconut oil calms the need for itching. This prevents the person from scratching skin vehemently and he or she can make do with gentle patting of the skin to calm the itch. In due course of time, the eczema lesion may subside and vanish. On the other hand, if it is itched and meddled with, it inflames all the more and may lead to even more breakouts.

Taking coconut oil internally may also help in eczema, as it helps in many other conditions.

7. Chamomile tea
The tea made from chamomile is very soothing. The tricky part is to apply it over the skin. For that, take a clean gauze and wrap it over the skin. Put chamomile tea in small amount and trap it in the gauze. Keep the body part still and let the skin absorb nutrients from chamomile tea. Remember to make the tea strong, steeping again and again so that it is darker and more concentrated. Otherwise the amount of chamomile nutrients would be small.

8. Diet and Lifestyle changes ( Go fully natural )
Perform major diet changes after monitoring your diet for few months. It is believed that eczema is caused by allergy. So, it could be due to a food allergy. The best thing would be to go all natural and minimize the consumption of fast foods and processed foods. Also try minimizing the use of deodorants and perfumes. They may irritate the skin. Search for fully herbal soaps and shampoo. If you suspect any allergy - gluten, yeast, lactose are the three prominent ones, get rid of the foods that cause allergy.

9. White Vinegar
Dilute some vinegar in a bucket of water. Dip your body parts in it. See if it works for you. If vinegar helps, then one can apply it regularly on skin lesions.

Similar effect is also observed by applying Apple Cider Vinegar. It is gentler than regular white vinegar with comparable results.

10. Aloe Vera
Best to reduce itching . A major problem with eczema is the severe itching caused by it. Apply aloe Vera gel on the skin to reduce the itching sensation. It helps to prevent the rashes from spreading.
Aloe Vera also contains essential amino acids which help skin to get taught, boost collagen and heal itself faster.

Similar soothing effect is produced by witch hazel extract liquid.

Prepare a carrot mask for skin. Carrots are very high in beta carotene, a form of Vitamin A which bolsters skin healing and exfoliation. It is also a wonderful skin detox.

12. Calendula Cream
There are lots of calendula containing creams. You can try a good one as eczema ointment. It should be just the calendula extract. Actually, calendula is noted for its skin soothing ( inflammation reducing ) properties.
If the salve is not working or worsening it, you can try using homemade calendula tea instead. It is more natural but slow acting. Nevertheless, calendula helps in eczema.

13. Get An Allergy test done
This is quite cumbersome, painful and time taking process to get an allergy test done. But, it really helps people who suffer from allergic asthma and eczema. Many people suffer from eczema and asthma both, and it is a dreadful situation. It clearly shows that the body is allergic to something. It could be the common things like dust mites, pollen, any chemical or something at work.

For some people, it could even mean changing their job and moving to a position where they are not in contact with the allergen.

14.  Cleansing The Blood
There is some indication that skin diseases may be a result of certain impurities in blood, although it may not have the same effect on every person. What we can do is to cleanse and purify our blood on a regular basis. Here is a list of some foods and herbs which I have compiled that are excellent for blood cleansing and promoting better circulation.

Pomegranates
Ginger
Garlic
Green juice a day ( this can be cucumber, celery, spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage etc )
Apples
Grapes

15. Turn Your Body Alkaline
I shall touch on this subject briefly, because it is a vast field. The idea is that human body prefers an alkaline state ( basic environment ) inside. Foods that are acidifying for the body may be harmful if not enough alkalizing foods are taken.
Acidic forming foods are cheese, meat, eggs and most fast foods.
Alkalizing foods are lemons, Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemons, Most veggies and some fruits.

I suggest you take 40 % foods that are acid forming and rest 60 % alkalizing to neutralize the body's internal pH. In the long run, it can have dramatic results in terms of preventing diseases like gout, arthritis etc.

16. Get your omega - 3 and omega - 6
Both omega 3 and omega 6 are essential fatty acids for our body. They are excellent in lowering systemic inflammation in all kinds of illness, specially in acne, arthritis and inflammatory skin diseases.

You can get omega 3 from fish oil, like salmon and omega -6 from evening primrose oil.

Eczema is not contagious. However, it is quite resistant to both home remedies and medication. It takes dedicated effort and eating a very healthy diet to fight it back. Most cases of mild eczema on body can be healed with natural treatment methods.

But, severe eczema should not be neglected. It needs to be treated with medication. Eczema on sensitive regions, like groin, eyelids, scalp and face should be shown to a dermatologist. This is important because eczema in these areas can lead to subsequent health concerns like hair loss, scars and eyesight issues.
